The VDWS was founded in 1974 to represent the interests of windsurfers and sailors, and nowadays also includes kitesurfers. The VDWS’s primary focus is on supporting instructors and surf schools, regulating training, and establishing standards. For example, the VDWS developed and introduced the Basic Windsurfing Certificate, which guarantees standardised training and defines a minimum standard for windsurfers. Since 2000, there has also been a standardised training programme for kitesurfing instructors.
Even today, the VDWS remains the benchmark for anyone wishing to learn windsurfing or kitesurfing and subsequently practise the sport worldwide with a recognised certificate. There are numerous areas for wind‑ and kitesurfing that may only be accessed with a valid licence from the VDWS.
